Art by Barbara Yochum
Hi,
I thought you might like to know a little bit about me.
I decided to become an artist when I was 5 years old I never consider being anything else I’ve been painting most of my life. I went to art school on Saturday mornings from 9 to 17 years at the Museum School at Broad and Pine Steets in Philadelphia. I was offered a full scholarship when I was 15 I would have begun college at 16. My parents decided against it and for awhile I gave up my dream.
I worked a few years after high school and one morning in my office I noticed art students walking up Broad Street. I enquired where they were going and was told the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at Broad and Cherry Streets. I looked into it and applied and was accepted. I had a full scholarship after my first semester and the last two years were on a Ford Foundation Grant. I attended to the Academy for five wonderful years. The Academy offered me a job teaching art at the University of New Orleans which I accepted. Unfortunately due to a huge mail strike my paper work was lost for many months and I began to sell my art on Jackson Square where I have sold my work on and off for 50 years.
I have had solo shows all across America and won prizes at shows as well.
During the summer months I did a circuit of shows across the US, as it is ferociously hot in New Orleans during the summer.
I had my own gallery on Royal Street called “The 906 Dream Studio” for several years and went back to Jackson Square in 2012 where I still show and see a couple of days a week. Until recently because COVID 19 has shifted things around a bit and I am learning a new art! The art of selling on line!
